Great South Gate
臺灣府城大南門
Photo: Unknown, CC BY-SA 3.0One of the few surviving gates of the old walled city, in a small park of banyans a short walk from the Confucius Temple.
History
The gate was rebuilt in stone in 1736, when the city's gates were converted from timber. It keeps its half-moon barbican, built at an angle to the inner gate for defence. Most of the wall around it was demolished under Japanese rule.
