After dark

Night markets in Tainan

Each night market opens on its own days. Pick a day to see which ones are on, or let the page pick tonight for you.

Which night?

  1. North

    Garden Night Market

    花園夜市

    Thu · Fri · Sat · Sun17:00–00:00

Tainan's largest night market, with about 400 stalls on a big open lot. Food rows sit on one side; clothing, goods and carnival games fill the rest, and stalls hang tall flags overhead.

    Look for

Oyster omelette · braised snacks (lu wei) · spicy duck blood soup · chicken cutlet · stinky tofu · souffle pancakes · candied sweet potato

    Getting there

    • City bus 7 from Tainan Station (south side) to the Flower Night Market (Hewei Road) stop, or bus 0 Left (0左) to the Garden Night Market stop, about 2 minutes' walk.

Stalls start at 5 pm; come before dark, because the aisles fill up later in the evening.

  2. East

    Dadong Night Market

    大東夜市

    Mon · Tue · Fri17:00–01:00

Tainan's second-biggest market, on Linsen Road in the East District. Since 2023 the site has run as two side-by-side markets: Dadong, about 100 mostly food stalls, and Dadongdong (大東東夜市), about 300 stalls of food, games and goods.

    Look for

Taiwanese shaved ice · sweet potato balls · slate-grilled meat · scallion pancakes · spicy duck blood · pan-fried dumplings · roasted corn

    Getting there

    • City bus 3 from Tainan Station (south side) to the Longshan Temple stop.

A fence divides the two halves, so to go from one to the other you leave and walk round on the street.

  3. West Central

    Wusheng Night Market

    武聖夜市

    Wed · Sat18:00–00:30

One of Tainan's oldest night markets, running since 1984, with about 250 stalls. Food stalls run through most of the site, and games and goods sit near the car park. Many vendors also trade at Garden and Dadong on other nights.

    Look for

Oyster omelette · sausage in sticky-rice sausage · French crepes · fried chicken · braised duck head · swordfish sticks · candied sweet potato and taro

    Getting there

    • City bus 3 from Tainan Station (north side) to the Wenxian Junior High School stop, or about 15 minutes on foot from Shennong Street.

It is the closest of the big markets to the old city, so it is easy to walk to after sightseeing.

  4. North

    Xiaobei Night Market

    小北觀光夜市

    Every day12:00–00:00

A covered market on Ximen Road, so rain is not a problem. It has fixed shops rather than pop-up stalls, selling local dishes, fruit, cold drinks and ice desserts, plus clothes and shoes.

    Look for

eel noodles · fried sea snails · fresh fruit · ice desserts

    Getting there

    • Blue Line (藍幹線) bus from Tainan Station (north side) to the Jiancheng Market stop, then about 5 minutes on foot.

Ask for 小北觀光夜市 by name; the nearby 小北新成功夜市 is a different market that opens only on Tuesday and Friday.

Days and hours come from the city tourism bureau and recent reports. Stalls keep their own hours, and markets close early or skip a night in heavy rain or a typhoon.
