A small 19th-century reservoir in the hills east of Xinhua, with a suspension bridge and a 4 km road around the water.

History

A farmer named Ouyang An built it in 1846 to store water for irrigation, and it is often called Taiwan's first reservoir. Zhou Maoqi paid for an expansion in 1863, and under Japanese rule the banks were repaired and sluice gates added. A newspaper readers' poll in 1927 put it among Taiwan's finest views, and it was laid out as a scenic area in 1939. The name comes from the tiger-head shape of the hill above it, and it is nicknamed little Sun Moon Lake.
