History
The Japanese-owned Taiwan Sugar Company (臺灣製糖株式會社) founded a sugar factory here at Cheluqian (車路墘) in 1909, and it began production in 1910. After 1946 it was run by the state Taiwan Sugar Corporation, took the name Rende Sugar Factory in 1969, and closed in 2003. The Ten Drum percussion group took over part of the site in 2005 and has opened it to the public on a regular basis since 1 January 2007. A group of Japanese-era warehouses survives on the grounds, which cover about 7.5 hectares.
