History
The island was once San Kunshen (三鯤鯓), one of the seven sandbanks along the old Taijiang lagoon, and fishermen settled it in the late Qing. Its present name refers to the lamps fishing boats lit at night to draw fish. In 1978 a new southern channel for Anping Harbour cut it off from the next sandbank, and the Yuguang Bridge, still the only road link, opened in 2009. The island has hosted an art festival every two years since 2017, and the 2020 National Day fireworks were held here.
