What it is

A cantaloupe is halved, seeded and the hollow filled with shaved ice, then topped with fruit. At Tai Cheng the ice is cantaloupe and the topping is small melon balls, with no sugar added.

How it is made

The melon is cut in half and the seed cavity packed with ice. Toppings are fruit or scoops of fruit ice, depending on the flavour you choose.

How to eat it

Share one. The portion is large. Melon ice is a winter item, and in summer the same shop switches to mango ice made with Irwin mangoes.

In Tainan

Tai Cheng Fruit Ice on Zhengxing Street in Tainan says it adds no sugar and relies on the fruit's own sweetness.
