Guanziling Hot Spring

關子嶺溫泉

A hot spring village in the hills of Baihe, known for its grey, muddy water and for chicken roasted in metal drums.

History

Japanese soldiers came across the spring in 1898, and the first inn, Yoshidaya (吉田屋), opened in 1904. Public baths followed in 1913, and by 1916 Guanziling was counted among Taiwan's four great hot springs with Beitou, Yangmingshan and Sichongxi. The alkaline water comes out at about 75°C, grey with mud and smelling of sulphur, and it is often described as Taiwan's only mud hot spring. At the Fire and Water Spring (水火同源), about 3 km away, flame and water come out of the same spot, and the fire has burned since a monk from Daxian Temple found it in 1701.
