Dutch Formosa: Anping to Chihkan

Follow the Dutch East India Company from its fortress on the Anping sandbar to its outpost on the mainland. Start with milkfish skin by Anping Old Fort and see the Dutch wall and the treaty-port trading houses. Then cross to Chihkan Tower for migao, and finish with danzai noodles.
Getting there
Start in Anping, a taxi ride west of the old town. After the shrimp rolls, take a short taxi ride east to Chihkan Tower. The rest is on foot.
On the way
- Anping Tree House: A banyan-covered warehouse and the trading house of a British firm that set up here in 1867.
- Anping Old Fort (Fort Zeelandia): The site of Fort Zeelandia. Outside the main gate stands the Dutch south wall, wrapped in banyan roots.
- Anping Kaitai Tianhou Temple: A Mazu temple beside the fort, rebuilt in 1966.
- Eternal Golden Castle: Optional detour south: a moated Qing fort from 1874 to 1876.
- Chihkan Tower (Fort Provintia): Qing pavilions on the foundations of Fort Provintia. Look for the Dutch brickwork and the well.
- Grand Matsu Temple: Two Zheng-era temples a short walk south of Chihkan Tower.
